Day 144 – Defying Gravity

Before I hit the topic, let me just say that I’m a little tired. Tired of food, tired of thinking about food, tired of managing food, tired of being tired, tired of being in pain, tired of thinking … yep, just tired.

Still off topic … I decided to go to a chiropractor. Everyone has opinions about this, but honestly, I’m getting desperate. Anyway, I’ve never been a believer, so this was a big leap for me. Chose one nearby – nice office, clean, efficient. Had an exam, and x-rays, and some treatment. Today, I can hardly walk, my hips are killing me, and I have new zingers. I’m going to assume my overly sensitive body is just going through some “adjustment” pains. I go back on Monday and I’m going to give this a fair go … hopefully it will help!

Now about gravity … heavy subject (ha ha) … actually it’s an interesting phenomenon regarding out bodies and weight. Did you know you could weigh less on different parts of the Earth thanks to gravity? The difference isn’t much, but you would weigh about one per cent less if you moved from the Arctic Circle to the Peruvian mountains. I’m living somewhere in between, so not so much of an advantage. 😉 It’s all about gravity.

But gravity also wears on our bodies and changes shapes. In particular, girdle fat, or what’s commonly called a belly bulge. Getting rid of the belly bulge is important for more than just vanity. Excess abdominal fat, and in particular visceral fat (the kind that surrounds your organs and puffs your stomach out) is a predictor of many health problems, including heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. Hormones, age, and many other genetic factors may interfere with the ability to reduce the belly bulge and I’m living that.

As you get older, your body changes how it gains and loses weight. As I’m losing weight, I’m also watching how my body shape is really changing. Some ways are wonderful and I feel very rewarded by that, but others, not so much. Women know what age and gravity do to those once attractive, perky, or pleasing parts of our bodies. I can pretty much put “sagging” as an adjective in front of half of my body parts! And certainly in the middle – where women are more likely to carry weight – we seem hold on to this weight with a vengeance! I wish I were able to do workouts geared toward reducing that pooch fat. Unfortunately, at least at this point, I can’t. But what I’m noticing most is that this weight band has gotten much flabbier, where it was once more firm and bigger, of course. But as it “loosen” and drops, it puts that weight at even greater odds with my spine.

I’m trying to figure out how to address this. I didn’t go to the pool yesterday or today, just hurting too much from the chiro experience. And I can’t do anything that requires getting on the floor (I can’t get up from the floor), which is where most exercise folks want you to be to attack belly fat. So … for the next couple of days I’m going to try some other options. I have a DVD for exercise bands – both standing and seated. And I am now in the weight range where I can get back on the wii-fit board. I also have a DVD with an exercise ball. Time to look at some other ways to address the blob around my middle!!
